Its been a while since my last blog post. I would like to let everyone that my progress is doing good, my hearing has not returned 100% but it's the best its been since I was affected with SSHL.
Currently I dont use a hearing aid and maybe down the road I will consider one, but as of today I have been able to adjust my lifestyle to SSHL. When I go out to a loud place I have learned to sit on one end of the crowd facing to my good ear to them. At the beginning it was difficult to converse with a group larger than 4-6 people but now this is not a big problem. With my wife, I also always sit on the side with the good ear facing her.
I also stopped taking the lypoflavanoid pill which was quite expensive without seeing a big improvement in my hearing. There might have been small improvements in my hearing with the pill but not big enough for me to notice them.
Hope to hear from others to see how they are progressing with their hearing loss.
Hi Roberto,
ReplyDeleteI had sshl on first of may 2013, and I started recovering some hearing two weeks ago, about three months later the onset.
I would like to know when did you stop improving?
Take care,
Maria
Hello Maria,
ReplyDeleteI went ahead and stopped noticing improvements in my hearing about 4 months after. Keep in mind that my hearing loss was profound and most of my improvements were only captured via the audiologist booth.
Don't ever give up hope as the human body has been known to do some remarkable things.
Hope your hearing continues to recover and the best of luck.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog- I was diagnosed with SSHL two weeks ago. Already have gone through a 12 day regimen of Prednisone to no avail. I am going in for an ECOG tomorrow morning, and an MRI next week. The doctor suggested some very painful shots in my ear- I'm very hesitant. I'm 33, an athlete, a mom of an 8 year old, eat organic and rarely take even a Tylenol, let alone a vitamin supplement. I'm, well, ridiculously healthy- except now I have this. I am confused, flustered, annoyed, my family is worried, etc. Every day seems to be a little different- sometimes I am in an "underwater rave" as I like to say. Other days, it's just robot talk (hearing my own voice included). Still other days, like today, just extreme fullness and echoing. Did you (or has anyone) had an ECOG done? What are my options besides these shots, which I don't even want to think about? Many thanks….. ;)
Devon,
ReplyDeleteI can completely understand how you feel. The SSHL made me see and accept life in a competely different light.
Currently I live in Houston and went to see two of the most renowned Neurotologists in the country and got some answers regarding the condition but not the root cause to the hearing loss.
Both doctors have lots of clinical studies suggesting that the prednisone oral pills is the best treatment. The ear shot was suggested but told it more than likely wouldnt do anything. I opted for the oral steroid only.
The research they have perform shows that most patients recover the hearing but the levels vary. The rule of thumb was about 30 days after that the recovery tends to plateau.
Do you know what level of hearing loss you have been diagnosed? I was a with a profound hearing loss and recover about 50% of it.
Keep a positive outlook even though at this time its hard.
Please let me know if you have any more questions and would be glad to answer them.
Thanks for the blog and posts.
